Mixing Business with Pleasure: The Potential Peril of Social Media

by Jennifer Laycock

One of the questions I hear most often when I'm teaching a social media seminar is how to balance their professional social media presence with their personal one. People ask me if they should blog and Tweet as themselves or as their business. They ask if they should mix business contacts with friends on Facebook and LinkedIn. They want to know if they can talk about their hobbies on their business profiles. Basically, they want to know the pros and cons of mixing business with pleasure in the blurry-lined landscape of social media.

Data beats opinions in any decision

by Mike Moran

Why not try several different approaches in different parts of your Web site and see what happens? In this case, you'd want to see what rankings you get, yes, but also what sales you get. And you'd want to see what happens if you mix it up and do it another way. Over time, the data will inform you as to the best approach, and you can apply that in other parts of your site.

Go Blog Yourself Step 1: Know Who's Looking

by Stoney deGeyter

Some blogs are out there looking for the little-boy giggles. Others are trying to attract the same element that pays to go peek behind the curtain at the freak-show. If you're a business blogger, looking to speak to other professionals, you need to target people in your industry. The point here is, before you can really know who or what you're going to be as a blogger, you need to know who your intended audience is.

Just as Albert Einstein said, "Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited to all we now know and understand, while imagination embraces the entire world, and all there ever will be to know and understand". I guess it holds true for opinions as well, although some opinions seem to be more equal than the others :) - informed opinions are good, pooling opinions is great, but, all the same, being open for opinions is still best.

In response to... One keyword per page: once more with feeling

Certainly when starting out with any page, I think it's worth targetting a single 'longer' search term.

Not only because there is less competition when using longer terms, but also because someone using longer search terms almost by definition knows better what they're looking for. In other words, a shorter buying cycle type prospect is someone who knows the specifics.

I'm with you on this one :-)

Mark, that's a good question that feeds directly into the point that I was trying to make. If you think about it, people looking for "form design software" want different answers than those looking for "form design." Searchers for "form design" are probably looking for a how-to article, rather than a piece of software.

Instead of trying to optimize the page already doing well for "form design software" for the keyword "form design," also, why not create a new page devoted to "form design"? You've probably forgotten more about form design than most people will ever know. Perhaps you could create a whole tutorial section of your site about form design where you subtly sell your software, too. That kind of helpful content will get links from other places, and might break into the "form design" rankings, while your software page probably never will.

This is an excellent example of what I am trying to say in the article. It's often better to create another page for another keyword rather than trying to optimize the same page for both.
