Striking Out On My Own All While Staying Put

by Jennifer Laycock

Regular readers of Search Engine Guide probably noticed I've been less than active as an author and Twitter voice this past year. All of that's about to change. Over the next few months you'll all see me getting back into the swing of things here on Search Engine Guide and hopefully back to my chatty self on Twitter and other social media sites.

Are you ready for Bing?

by Mike Moran

No, I haven't been living under a rock. (Who does that, anyway?) I know Bing has been out for months. That's not what you need to be ready for. You need to be ready for approval of the Yahoo! deal with Bing, because once that happens, everything you've been doing with Yahoo! will change. And if you haven't been doing anything with Yahoo!, you might want to change that, too....

5 Worries That Can Kill Your SEO Campaign

by Stoney deGeyter

Spending nights worrying about your SEO campaign can eat up a lot of energy that is better applied to other, more important matters. Here are five things the business owner need to stop worry about.

The 3 Variables of Google Local Search

by Jeff Howard

Sometimes organic search seems straight forward, type in a keyword and returned is a list of 10 recommended websites. Of course, getting to the top isn't so simple, but the notion that once you arrive at the top, traffic will ensue is a hypothesis hard to deny. Local search results don't play into this scheme. They have variables such as size of the map, and definition of a region's center that combine with trust, a citation, or sometimes what I call "sureness factors" to determine what businesses should be recommended. This post isn't a blueprint for better local rankings, but...

Search Marketing Is Easier Than You Think

by Mike Moran

Not long ago, I spoke to a group of local chemical manufacturers on Internet marketing. After the talk, I sat next to an veteran business owner at dinner, someone who clearly appreciated the talk but also felt a bit overwhelmed at the prospect of Internet marketing, especially search marketing. I was happy to put him a little at ease, because he really knows a lot more than he thought he did....

In response to... 5 Worries That Can Kill Your SEO Campaign

Great article as always Stoney.

There's that fine line between how much involvement the business owner has within SEO decision making and how much is placed in the hands of the appointed SEO consultant.

I always find it comes down to an element of trust. It's similar to hiring a decorator..... for those first few strokes you're always keeping a careful eye on how the painting is going... then your confidence builds as progress is made and you leave the decorator to get on doing what they do best. You lay down the groundwork - choose the colours, decor etc etc, the decorator advises, then off they paint! The last thing you want to be doing is looking over their shoulder quoting which brushes are best having just read an article in latest copy of "Decorating Monthly". You get the gist :)

The elements of "worry" disappear as you see progress being made... correct progress.. and once that element of trust is in place you work as a partnership... in leave the sleepless nights to accounting worries rather than SEO worries!

In response to... Social Media Myth, It Isn't About the Conversation, It's About the Sale

Eric ~ I like the article but I do feel that you are missing a major aspect to social media (SM) and why it can work for building business. I think that looking at SM only from a lead generation standpoint and to use it's potential to line pockets is one sided.

SM should be used to open the door of communication for both business and client\customers. It should be used to generate new ideas, help clients\customers, generate trust, and build brands.

For my dollar and one half...social media should not only be used to generate more sales, interest, consideration, etc...but it should be used as a microphone for customers\clients and a head set for business\brands. My thoughts and nice article. I will return for more.

In response to... How Small Businesses Can Brand Themselves On the Cheap Online

Nice written.

The main thing I reiterate to my customers is to be creative. And not to slog a dead horse, but think outside the box. Make sure your brand/domain is on any delivery vehicles, your store front, any piece of paper that may get in a customer's hands, your voice mail message, etc. It's really endless.
