Search Engine Guide - Why I Don't Obsess About Google

Week of 2008-08-14

Hi Everyone,

I'm trying something new this week. Free case of beer to the first 10 people to email me after they get this!

OK, so I'm clearly kidding. I'm just checking to see if anyone actually reads this and to remind you I love getting feedback. I can't send you any beverages but I do want to hear from you if you have any comments or ideas for improving the newsletter or our sites. :-)

Cheers!

Why I Don't Obsess About Google

by Stoney deGeyter

So many people are obsessed with Google. And as far as that goes, there is good reason to be. Google is the largest search engine that gets the most searches and delivers far more traffic than any other engine. But I'm not one to watch Google on a hyper-obsessive level.

I'll Take Links And 11 Gold Medals Please

by Debra Mastaler

Do you do any link building planning?  Planning as in mapping out locations you want to get links from and developing strategies around upcoming events? If you're not, you may want to take a look at what one company has done to capitalize on anticipation.  The goodwill, media attention and inbound links they generated from one small commercial is priceless and worth it's weight in gold....

Interview: VisiStat Analytics CTO

by Manoj Jasra

In the current economy, many Small Business, Small Enterprise, and Marketing professionals are watching their Web spend more closely than ever. I caught up with Stephen Oachs, CTO at VisiStat Inc and got his take on how important Web analytics is today for effective online advertising and direct impact on a business's bottom line....

Small Business Can Step Back from the Bleeding Edge of Social Media

by Jennifer Laycock

Yesterday at BarCamp Ohio I sat listening to a conversation among people who were trying to balance the need to be involved in social media outreach with the need to run their businesses. Their frustration was based on the fear that as they finally embraced a social network or site, the masses would move some place new. For a company focused running a business instead of playing in the social media sphere, it's a valid concern.

Why I Still Won't SEO Flash Websites

by Stoney deGeyter

Google indexes flash, but so what? There is still not much there that can be optimized with any kind of effectiveness.

An End To Ranking Reports Is An End to Analysis

by Stoney deGeyter

Recently Google started blocking several of the big-name rank checking software used by many in the SEO industry. This, of course, sparked the debate on whether SEO firms should be bothering with providing ranking reports to their clients. I have to say, I'm conflicted on that issue.

One Pet Peeve Viral Marketing and Search Engine Optimization Have in Common

by Jennifer Laycock

While my roots rest firmly in the camp of search engine optimization and search engine marketing, I've spent the last year or two leaning more heavily toward the blogging, social media, viral marketing side of things. I'm often struck at the similarities between these methods. For instance, knowing your audience and creating content that makes them happy is generally the key in all four areas. Yesterday, I also realized the similarities in terms of pet peeves.

Cartier Goes Slumming While Google Adds Insights

by Sage Lewis

What do Google, SERPs and Cartier all have in common? They are all "In the News" this week. Sage encourages us to check out Google's new tool Google Insights as well as Cartier's My Space page. Google Insights allows you to search for what people are well, searching for and then see both a geographic breakdown and time line of of popularity by percentage. Cartier's appearance on My Space adds credibility to an online community that was previously viewed as the "slums." Sage also highlights several SERP-related studies and articles, discussing the importance of being in the top ten while...

In response to... I'll Take Links And 11 Gold Medals Please

Debra

So true! (LOVE that commercial by the way). I have a hobby blog on horses, and I started covering the Olympics about a month and a half before they started, which was also a month before any of the other major equestrian sites did. I saw nobody was doing it, and decided to position myself ahead of time as the number one resource for Olympic equestrian information. So far I've gotten tons of links (some from major news media), saw a 5,000% increase in traffic, a 1,000% increase in subscriptions, have seen days where I was getting comments every 10 minutes, have connected with people all over the world and some who know the Olympic riders personally, and have made a lot more money from my Google ads. I have better search engine visibility for Olympic equestrian related searches than NBC, the official Olympic equestrian site, and the other major horse sites. All from planning ahead and getting started early! That wouldn't have happened if I'd only written about the Olympics as they were happening. And the best thing is, I did it on purpose.

Moral of the story: if you've got a major event in your niche, cover it often and early, and plan ahead like Debra said. It will pay off in a major way.

In response to... Small Business Can Step Back from the Bleeding Edge of Social Media

Jennifer,
Great article. Small businesses are really trying to decide how/when/where to embrace this.

You really summed it up well and I think put some anxiety to rest for those who just don't have the resources to spend on a full blown social media campaign.

I do think small niche businesses must pick one or 2 tho and get started. I am working for some great people who are still trying to decide if blogging is helpful!

I'm sending them the link to this article for inspiration! I think they can realize that you don't have to do it all, but you can benefit from using some of the tools that will reach out to their target market.

In response to... Small Business Can Step Back from the Bleeding Edge of Social Media

Whether the bleeding edge or leading edge, it's important for SoMe directors or strategists to make sure clients/employers understand that SoMe is ever changing and needs to be constantly evaluated. You have to stay flexible in your strategy, experiment, shift focus. This isn't just a sound SoMe strategy but for many marketing strategies. Opportunistic marketing is important. The world moves way too fast to plan a strategy a year in advance. Some things can be laid out, leaving room for shifts in target audience behavior, company mission, technology, even social movements.
