What My Kids Taught Me About Social Mediaby Jennifer LaycockI was sitting around this afternoon thinking about how we approach so many areas of our lives and how many things I'm having to teach my four year old and two year old on a daily basis. In the spirit of "All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten," I'm offering up the first in a series of posts for online marketing. Leading off is the most obvious comparison to life as a child...social media. SEO Selection Via Google Webmaster Guidelinesby Stoney deGeyterEvery now and then I find it useful to look and see what Google has to say to webmasters about their websites. I want to revisit Google's Guidelines for selecting an SEO provider. Does cleaning out cookies stop personalization?by Mike MoranMany marketers are asking me about personalized marketing, which you should expect to see more and more of in the next few years. We've already seen behavioral targeting in display ads and personalized search, and we'll see more personalized advertising emerge. But are we marketers just assuming that users will allow all this personalized marketing in? What if they clean their cookies regularly? Will that prevent those users from being exposed to personalized ads?... Check Out Market Motive's Live Graduation Ceremonyby Jennifer LaycockRemember back in the day when graduation was all about sitting in a stuffy auditorium while some Ben Stein clone in a robe read off a list of a few hundred (or worse, a few thousand) names? Booooooooooooring. These days, Web 2.0 has kicked it up a bit and made things more interesting. At least that's what the team over at Market Motive is telling me in regards to the upcoming graduation ceremonies for their first class of Master Level Consultants. New Service For Small Businesses Launches - GetListed.orgby David WallaceOfficially launched on January 20th, 2009, GetListed.org is a fantastic new resource for small business owners that will help them learn more about the way their business is listed online. The main goal of GetListed.org is "to help small businesses claim and enhance their listings at major search engines."... How do I get links to my Web site?by Mike MoranThe owner of a Web site that sells ski and snowboard equipment contacted me recently with a burning question, "How do I get links to my Web site?" His e-mail was filled with lots of geeky search jargon about reciprocal links and PageRank effects--enough that I suspected I wasn't dealing with someone clueless about search marketing. Instead, I think this business owner had done a lot of research on search marketing and was asking me about what he'd been told. He was gearing up for a big link campaign, targeting ski resorts and any other place he could find. I... 12 Marketing Minds, One Free eBookby Jennifer LaycockIf you're trying to kick off your 2009 marketing plans with some new ideas, you may want to check out a new (free) ebook put together by Valeria Maltoni over at Conversation Agent. The book is a compilation of the thoughts of twelve online marketers from a variety of backgrounds and skips the usual start of the year prediction model in favor of sharing thoughts on tactics and strategy. Web Analytics Tips and Best Practicesby Manoj JasraIn late December Web Analytics World featured a holiday contest where readers were asked to submit some of their favorite analytics tips/best practices. What My Kids Taught Me About Social MediaWhat's also important to remember is that whatever you do online, especially in the social media setting, is always part of who you are. Your reputation sticks. When I was in 1st grade, a boy named Mike threw up in class one day. For the rest of his grade, middle and high school life, his peers saw him as the kid who threw up in 1st grade. People (and the Internet) have long memories, and the minute you get a reputation for one thing, it's incredibly difficult to be seen in another way. Cari McGee In response to... Social Media Reminder: Think Before You Speak...I find it funny and a bit odd that many bloggers are taking this as a big company trying to censor free speech or Twitter in general. It's not about that. Anyone is welcome to say whatever they want online or off (not including the "Fire!" in a crowded theater example). But just be ready to bear the consequences of those words. Andrew was well within his right to say Memphis sucked. And FedEx is well within their right to not utilize his services because of it. Don't cry "victim" when your words come back to bite you. Say what you like - but take person responsibility for whatever may come of it. Simple as that. Tim Bourquin Return to the Top of this Page Free SEO ToolsThinking of buying SEO software?
